LOS ANGELES - Gennaro Regina's Vesuvius lands in Hollywood. And wins. The talented Neapolitan artist received a prestigious award at the Los Angeles Movie Awards for the docu-short Suriezione, “Surjection” for the star-spangled audience, in the “Best Experimental” category. A great honor not only for Regina, but for Naples and Campania as a whole.
The charm of the volcano, almost always confined to the role of a postcard background, emerges in the foreground and enchants the audience. The perimeter of the crater and the performance of hands, colors and lava sand that mix in the wind to the sound of music have meant that the organizers did not hesitate to recognize this project with applause and a prize.
An important signal launched from the womb of a new Neapolitan avant-garde, of which Regina is an extraordinary icon, capable of making her voice heard all the way here, on the other side of the ocean. The atmospheres are incredible. It is good for the heart to see the vast and widespread image of a creative Naples that can go beyond its own traditions. Traditions that are not set aside at all, but that mix in a blender of new energies and ideas capable of tracing directions that are in turn innovative.
Great enthusiasm in the room, in that Complex Theatre that for decades has represented one of the beating hearts of creative Hollywood and on whose stage actors of the caliber of Samuel L Jackson have been awarded. Among the many, the voice of director Brooklyn Lewis emerges who speaks to our microphones of Gennaro Regina as an "extraordinary source of inspiration", thanking him while waiting to be able to meet him personally.
Because the protagonist, as he told us on the phone, was unable to be here in Los Angeles for personal reasons. And he added that «this represents only the first step in a true internationalization of art and the entire Neapolitan culture». The one immediately following, again according to the artist, «is in fact already underway: a congress of the cities of the volcano that can bring together many different realities, but united by such a fascinating presence, the volcano precisely, around projects like this or, why not, of a completely different kind. As long as, of course, it is art».
In reality, Regina has already taken steps towards a global dimension: her work, El Alma del numero diez, is on display alongside the many trophies in the living room of the Dubai home of Diego Armando Maradona, whom the Neapolitan genius chose to portray in his most rebellious dimension as a “scugnizzo”.
