The tenth Congress of Cities on Volcanoes (COV 10) will be presented on Monday 3 September in Naples, at the Mostra d'Oltremare (Sala Capri, 10.30).
During the congress the art documentary SURIEZIONE will be screened and the contemporary art exhibition entitled " The Breath of the Earth " will be inaugurated on the same day at 8pm, featuring 18 works by the artist Gennaro Regina .
After 20 years from the first edition of this prestigious international congress organized by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), in collaboration with the Italian Association of Volcanology (AIV), Department of Civil Protection (DPC), Vesuvius National Park, Campania Region, Municipality of Naples and University of Naples Federico II, Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences (DISTAR), which also took place in Naples, a large part of volcanologists from all over the world will return to the wonderful city for promote and strengthen that indispensable link between the volcanological scientific community and those involved in the planning and protection of territories exposed to risk and the management of (possible) emergencies, in order to build a place for discussion and integration of experiences between the " city on volcanoes”.
The title chosen for the Italian edition is: " Millennia of stratification between human life and volcanoes: strategies for coexistence" . They are words that refer to a thousand-year-old culture which, in Italy more than elsewhere, also took shape around the complex relationship between volcanoes and those who live there. It is starting from this culture that the congress aims to develop useful strategies for building a prepared and resilient society, capable of managing the difficult balance between resources and the dangers of volcanoes, between the richness of the territory and its possible devastation.
At the inauguration of the congress, among others, the President of INGV, Carlo Doglioni , the Mayor of Naples, Luigi De Magistris , the Mayor of Pozzuoli, Vincenzo Figliolia , the Mayor of Ercolano, Ciro Buonajuto , the President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca and the head of the Civil Protection Department, Angelo Borrelli .
Alongside the scientific program (dedicated only to researchers, conference attendees and experts who deal with volcanology but also with social sciences, communication, land planning and emergency management), the parallel program will offer conference attendees and the public a series of cultural activities aimed at encouraging meetings and exchanges between congress participants and the area that hosts them. Among the proposed activities, the meeting between the mayor of Naples and that of Kagoshima, Japan, stands out, to seal a scientific twinning between two large cities exposed to volcanic risk.
on September 7th at 6.00 pm, it will be possible to attend the live painting performance that the artist Gennaro Regina accompanied by the DJ Roberto Funaro , and with the collaboration of the choreographer Marco Auggiero , will dedicate to the international event on the relationship between man and volcanoes.
